Throughout the ancient world, knowledge wasn’t transmitted through written texts as we know them today. In fact, many ancient cultures had little to no access to books or manuscripts to pass on their wisdom to future generations. So how did they manage to preserve their knowledge? One of the most effective methods was through mythology. Myths weren’t just entertaining stories, but profound allegories designed to pass on critical truths. Young people were introduced to these myths by their families and the surrounding society, and as they grew older, their teachers would help them uncover the deeper truths hidden within. However, most of this wisdom was transmitted orally, with written records being rare. Many believed it was unwise to leave such precious truths in writing, where they could be exposed, misinterpreted, or even misused.
